the idea first developped in 2019, when Maria Kobzeva got inspired by the protests against the Ramstein US Drone Base targeting the Middle-East from Germany. Drone as a symbol of power and facelessness...
DRONES AND DANCE
HOW IT STARTED
BOOTS AND HELMETS
In 2019 Maria first got together with Sandra Domnick to brainstorm and conceptualize the idea for a short Duet piece together.

In 2020, as the 1st wave of the pandemic hit, they didn't stop and continued working, searching, and developing the idea further – outside, at home & in the studios. Together with musician Max Clouth, they created a soundscape using the sound of boots, tape, zippers and the drone. That is how the first prototype of the duo was born: "Observing patterns".

TRIO + DRONE
Soon they met a drone racer – pilot Lukas Stemmler. The 3D artist raced drones in his spare time. With dancer Magdalena Dzeco and costume designer Michaela Kraft the team was getting bigger. After an intense creative process the work "OBSERVE" was born, a 25 minute piece that premiered at Zukunft Tanzt festival September 2020 at Gallus Theatre, Frankfurt.

FROM LIVE TO DIGITAL
When the second wave of Covid hit – Maria decided to create a short-film and develop the idea further. Together with Sandra Domnick and Lukas Stemmler they continued to research the possibilities between human and drone movements. Filmmaker Georg Gilstein, dramaturg Maria Hubert & musician Nickolas Fehr joined the project. After conceptualising over many zoom-meeting, the team finaly met in person and shot the scenes in different Hessian locations. After an online post-production period the dance-short film "CTRL_R" premiered on the Gallus Theatre Digital Platform in April 2021.

BACK TO THEATRE
The last step of the process led to a their first full-evening work "Patterns of perception". This time joined by Magdalena Dzeco and Patscharaporn Distakul, Kobzeva&Domnick developped this 50 min performance in 3 phases:

fist - during a Pop-up residency at Mousonturm, then a residency at Tanzhaus FRM, followed by the final week at Offenes Haus der Kulturen, where they Premiered the work (after postponement due to the pandemic) in July 2021.

Usually everyone knows that the drone is controlled by someone. I'm interested in making it have its own personality through the different ways it glides, pauses, turns, and looks at the performers. Can the drone take on a character, become a performer, through the choreography in the space?
